Designing a Time Capsule

SOOD’s Time Capsule

My prior article, mentioned the special pieces I’ve chosen from SOOD’s collection to add to a time capsule. For this part I’ll be walking through my process and ideas on what that time capsule itself would look and feel and what it would be made out of.

First off, I started off with a brainstorming exercise to come up with as many ideas for the time capsule itself.

Brainstorming Exercise for 5 minutes:

• An actual time capsule
• Shoe box with SOOD’s branding
• Packaging similar to when pieces are actually shipped.
• Digital Lookbook
• SD Card
• USB
• Smart Phone
• Closest with the pieces of SOOD within it
• Shoebox with the clothes in the box and a QR code to scan to the website or lookbook
• QR Code

I started exploring some concepts in a 3D tool called Vectary, and modeled out ideas of the time capsule with SOOD on top of the capsule.

Tried a couple more iterations by placing the banding on the side and the top.

I liked the idea that the brand’s name stood out, but as I thought more I felt like this didn’t do justice to the whole brand’s mission and aesthetic.

After brainstorming more, I was drawn to the idea of mixing technology with including the physical pieces within the time capsule. I also wanted to use an element of someone to be able to view the website as well. I thought of the idea of adding a QR code which leads to SOOD’s website. I found a black matte shoe box that matched SOOD’s aesthetic perfectly and decided this would be the base for the project.

I moved onto doing some research on QR codes. I came across QR Code generator to create a specific QR code that leads to SOOD’s website. My next step would be to print out the QR code to place within the box itself.

Next, I wanted to sketch out some ideas of how the time capsule would be decorated. I wanted to use SOOD’s branding to tell the whole story.

Materials I have available to create the time capsule:

• Black box
• Postcards
• Branded Tissue Paper
• Stickers

I will also be including the physical pieces itself, the QR code, and the lookbook within the time capsule as well.

Next I moved to Sketching to figure out how I’d like to decorate the time capsule itself, I thought about adding the logo to the outside, or the postcard, or even the branded tissue paper. Or lastly the idea of using the QR code or the tissue paper.

After the sketching I started to play with the box itself and decorating it to fit the Brand. I tried all the options to decorate the items.

I decided to just add the logo on the front to keep it simple and match the brand itself, inside I used SOOD’s tissue paper to wrap around the clothes add in the QR code to the front of the lid a thank you postcard with a hand written message for once the box is opened, the dolman shirt, blackwork patterned scarves, two jewelry pieces and the lookbook.

Final Thoughts

If I did this project again, I wish I had better skills for 3D modeling so I could continue to explore other avenues in the digital world for the time capsule, but I think for this project specifically the physical time capsule made more sense since I’d want to include the products itself.

This overall time capsule resembles SOOD as a brand, because it includes its packaging, clothing pieces, jewelry, scarves, a lookbook, and a QR code which takes the finders to the website. In the future, I hope that the website has a fresh new look and has gone through a lot of iterations by then, but the best part is this will hold the first pieces of SOOD that may or may not be available in the future :)!
