SOOD’s Time Capsule being found.

For this week's project, I wanted to combine my previously written articles on choosing items for a time capsule and the designing of a time capsule with building the perfect story and narrative of how it would go once the time capsule was found.

I started off this project by brainstorming as many story ideas as possible around mediums I can use and ideas for the story itself.

Mediums to Use to Attack the Project:

  • Procreate
  • Sketching
  • Stop motion with clay figures
  • Illustrations
  • UI components
  • Photos with illustrations
  • Photo essay story

Brainstorming Session for the Narrative:

  1. SOOD’s become successful in the future and the finders have come across the first-ever designs.
  2. SOOD’s time capsule is found by employees of SOOD in the future.
  3. SOOD’s time capsule is found by SOOD’s biggest competitor.
  4. SOOD’s time capsule is found by a woman or man who finds the pieces and uses them to inspire their life and feel confident.

The story I choose is number 3, to write from the perspective of SOOD’s future employee finding the time capsule. I have also decided to go with the medium of photographs and illustration enhancements since that’s the medium I’m most comfortable with.

Exploring Different Stories

I started writing two different stories to explore different ideas of the time capsule being found and realized the first story focused too much on finding the time capsule, and not enough on what happens when the time capsule is found. So I stopped writing story one and focused on the second story.

Story 1

Blake is a new designer at SOOD, and during his onboarding there are rumors of a time capsule of the first ever products made for SOOD.

Blake decides to go on a hunt to find these pieces. The only clue he had was that it was in Nob Hill in San Francisco.

He spends weeks and weeks, everyday after work and in the evenings looking for the box. One day, as he walked through the park he stubbed his toe on something sticking out. For a second his heart stopped, was it the time capsule?

He started digging and soon realized it was. He had come across SOOD’s original pieces.

And Story 2 is the one I end up choosing to go with for my narrative.

Year is 2145, SOOD has become has become an international brand and grown its team to over 1000 people in San Francisco.

Dwight is an aspiring designer in San Francisco, who recently lost his job and was struggling to pay his bills. He was walking through Huntington Park in Nob Hill and stubbed his toe on something that was sticking out of the ground.

He bent down and started digging, and recognized SOOD’s old logo. His heart dropped when he realized what it was and quickly opened it to find SOOD’s sought after collection.

Dwight held onto the box tight and ran home as fast as he could.

Kept running…

After thinking long and hard about what to do with his discovery he was set on selling the pieces to pay for rent. As he was packaging up the pieces, he sees archaic pattern, and starts researching on what it means.

After some quick research he finds out the pattern is a QR code that was used to access websites. He scans it and immediately his whole screen turns black and then all of sudden a Video pops up of the founder, explaining how the finder of the box has actually landed a role at SOOD for whatever they please.

Immediately after he receives email to come tour SOOD’s headquarters. Dwight sighs in relief knowing his problems have been solved.

Storyboarding

I decided to first jump onto Procreate to animate each image and add in motion lines which I learned from comic books designs. Then moved into InDesign to create the layout for the two page comic book, I wanted to use a similar aesthetic that was used for the look book orignally and build ontop of that.

The End Result — Enjoy!

Reflection Time

I had a blast working on this project and enjoyed mixing different mediums, Since my skills for sketching and drawing aren’t the best, I choose to combine photography and illustrations to make a playful comic. If I could do this again, I would explore illustrating the full comic book and really push my illustration skills next time.
